Discover the River Charente, described by King Henry IV as “The most beautiful river in my kingdom”, by river cruiser, kayak or canoe.
From the port of Royan, less than an hour’s drive away on the Atlantic coast, boat trips to discover the Gironde estuary and the Cordouan lighthouse, sailing lessons at all levels, boat hire and fishing trips are all available. The ferry to the Medoc peninsular leaves from here.
Further up the coast, La Rochelle offers boat trips to view Fort Boyard and the islands – Ile de Re, Ile d’Aix and Ile d’Oleron.
This whole area boasts beautiful beaches, from the sheltered, family friendly beach of Royan to the wild, secluded dunes of the Cote Sauvage.
Cognac outdoor swimming pool opens in July and August. The rest of the year the indoor pool is open. Only 35 minutes away is the Aquatic park and Thermal Centre of Les Antilles, a great day out.
